(37) #9 Valerie Mates (popcorn) Wed, Aug 5, 1992 (22:52). 64 lines. Minutes from the board of directors meeting, Thursday July 30, 1992 People at the meeting: robh, remmers, morel, danr, popcorn, mju, mcnally, arabella, griz, chelsea, steve, ec, and mdw (who may or may not count, since he showed up moments after we decided to close the meeting). Format: Instead of the everything-that-was-uttered style of minutes I've posted in the past, I'm switching to more of a summary format. The everything format was slow to type in, slow to read, and people tended to think they were reading conclusions when they were seeing ideas that were merely batted around and jeered at. Morel presented a real gavel to the president's office. Remmers used it to open the meeting. We skipped the first agenda item, which was the interfaith prayer and torch lighting. Treasurer's report - Danr: We've got enough for July and nearly enough for August. Several renewals should come in soon and keep us going right through to September. We're getting lots of $12 checks. Grex now has checks of its own. Publicity: I hung up a bunch of flyers the day before the art fair; we've had a few new users from that. I keep flyers in my humongous purse and hang them up when i pass by bulletin boards. (The cork kind). A few people took home flyers. Let me know if you want some flyers to post. Hardware - Steve: Despite one or two mystery crashes recently, Grex still has very good uptime, surviving several brownouts with no problems. The power conditioner works great! It's hot inside CE (the warehouse where Grex lives), sometimes 99 degrees inside Grex's box, but that's OK. We need to get the other disk up to make Usenet happy. Eagle prices are going down and are likely to stay that way. We need to test our possible Eagles on Marcus's computer. Need to increase the size of the tech committee. Rack mount: morel and tnt have been trying to reach one another. Installing the 80 meg drives means the system will be down for 2 to 8 hours for a surface analysis. Steve will do this on Tuesday August 4. Modems from the JCC sale are still in danr's basement. He will try to sell them via Usenet. We made $120 at the JCC sale, minus $20 for the table. Morel may possibly maybe be able to donate a disk or a modem to Grex to help get Usenet running more smoothly. Recent problems with Grex's feed were between mudos and destroyer: destroyer was having problems, so mudos had to spend lots of extra time connecting to it, leaving mudos with little modem time free to talk to Grex. Marc turned off binaries going from destroyer to mudos; things should get faster now. Mudos now has a second phone line. Can somebody lend Grex a SCSI disk? Just to test out, in a quick test to see if Grex can talk to SCSI disks. Send mail to steve or to staff if you can do this. Steve's been looking for this for a while now. Mary did a bunch of research on 501(c)3 status and brought in some photocopies with highlighted information. We may be better suited for 501(c)4 status instead, which isn't nearly as tax exempt as 501(c)3 status. Interpretations differ; some people think we are suited for 3 status, others think we should go for 4 if anything. We're going to read over the handouts and think about which way to go. Anybody got a spare SCP that Grex could stay connected to? Next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday September 9, 1992. ----------
