Staff Update: UPS batteries were purchased, and then it was found that we needed 6 not 4. The purchase of two additional batteries made the cost go over the original allocation the board voted on. The new batteries (now 6) have been placed in the UPS and it is charging, as of meeting the UPS had not been hooked back up to Grex. Aruba moved: Authorize extra $40 for batteries for the UPS bringing the total allocation to $160. Seconded by Gelinas. Aruba has volunteered to be Keeper of the Keys (for all extras). 4. (4.02)- Next Grex Update: Bhelliom asked about what documentation has been done so far. It was reported that Janc is documenting everything he is doing as he goes. The development team has access to it. Gelinas reported that the Next Grex machine is up and running. Dan Cross has installed his version of Grex hash to login, and has tested it. Jan has turned on soft updates. PF aren t working right (packet filtering- which replaced kernel blocks). Issues/Conversation about which version of OpenBSD we should use. Arrival of MDW Back to Item 6- Remmers will add the four new staffers to list. Mary will e-mail Dan Cross and let him know (three other new staffers present at meeting) Enter Janc Back to 4 (4.00) MDW reports that the new batteries are black and shiny. 4. (4.02)- Jan coerced Dan s installation. Jan more or less waiting on Kerebos, which is waiting for MDW s life to allow time for working on it. Could rush (not a good idea) and could also take short-cuts (see last parenthetical response). Discussion about creating a list of what needs to be done, and what order they should be done in. 8. Schedule Next Meeting: Much discussion, dates, originally attempted either Sept. 9th or 16th. Via e-mail after the meeting the date was set for: Tuesday, September 23rd, 7:00 pm Zing s Kid s Room Next Door. 9. New Business: In response to e-mail from Steve in regards to the safety of the Leibert UPS and fire potential, the idea of getting a fire extinguisher was proposed, or perhaps putting the UPS into a metal tub of some kind. Basic conversation melted down into- we ve made the UPS as safe as we can make it- although perhaps putting it on some sort of pallet for ventilation purposes would be a good idea. Mary- also had some questions regarding co-location so that she could perform additional research. Jan offered to give a tour that evening to new staff members, also offered to put the charged UPS back in the power loop. Board went into executive session. 10: End gavel: 8:55 pm. 28 responses total. ---------- (205) #1 Dan Cross (cross) Fri, Aug 1, 2003 (14:10). 5 lines. Just a note; it occurs to me that with the architecture of the OpenBSD authentication session, there's no reason we can't migrate to Kerberos over time. We know we can at least get users logging into the next grex machine now, and that gives us breathing room for Marcus to do whatever he likes with Kerberos. ---------- (205) #2 Kevin Albaugh (albaugh) Fri, Aug 1, 2003 (14:40). 2 lines. Re: The Pumpkin and fires, originating from an UPS or any other source: My stupid question is are the tape backups stored at another site? ---------- (205) #3 Carson (carson) Sat, Aug 2, 2003 (00:08). 3 lines. (I'll guess that "cindy" was actually keesan.) (very prompt, Anne. thanks!) ---------- (205) #4 Joe (gelinas) Sat, Aug 2, 2003 (00:28). 2 lines. Nope; lhbunkie, who joined grex at the meeting, and actually created her login later on. ---------- (205) #5 Steve Gibbard (scg) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (02:43). 12 lines. Thanks for posting these. A couple requests: It would be helpful for the vote totals to include who voted how. I assume in the approval of gelinas as a staff member that it was probably gelinas who abstained, but the minutes don't document that. Also, I'm curious what would prompt the Grex board to go into executive session, since that was something that really wasn't done during my time on the Grex board. I'm not asking for details of the presumably closed discussion, just what the topic was. ---------- (205) #6 Mary Remmers (mary) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (06:41). 6 lines. It was Joe who abstained on the vote he be added to root staff. The executive session was to discuss issues concerning a specific staff member. As we went into this session Kip mentioned we might want to make note of the reason too. I think that sounds like a good idea. ---------- (205) #7 Dan Cross (cross) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (09:52). 1 line. I wonder if it had to do with me being a disagreeable SoB at times. ---------- (205) #8 S M (mynxcat) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (13:13). 1 line. At times? ---------- (205) #9 Dan Cross (cross) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (14:52). 1 line. There's usually an hour or so a day when I'm not. ---------- (205) #10 S M (mynxcat) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (16:01). 1 line. I seem to always miss them ---------- (205) #11 Dan Cross (cross) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (17:11). 6 lines. You're so kind.... Note the difference in our party noises: /mynxcat is cruel and souless. /cross hugs you, but still disagrees. QED, I'm afraid.... ---------- (205) #12 Kevin Albaugh (albaugh) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (18:01). 1 line. Are tape backups stored off site? ---------- (205) #13 Scott Helmke (scott) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (20:00). 4 lines. Tape backups (latest copy, anyway) were stored offsite at my house, since I did all the backups. Grex needs a new backup czar. ---------- (205) #14 Steve Gibbard (scg) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (20:15). 1 line. Thanks, Mary. ---------- (205) #15 Walter Cramer (i) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (21:37). 4 lines. How much is backup czar an "insert tape, type 'backup' on console, & leaf through greenbar binders of vintage ASCII pr0n until the bell dings 'BACKUP DONE'" job vs. a "one wrong character in any of the 101 long commands you enter from memory is enough to toast grex" job? ---------- (205) #16 Dan Cross (cross) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (22:40). 7 lines. It looks like level zero dumps are done from single user modes; this was always to prevent modifications to the filesystem state while the dump(8) command was running, since dump dumped directories before files. It seems reasonable to me these days to use something like GNU tar instead, as it overcomes the limitations of tar that made it unsuitable for system backups in previous generations, and doesn't suffer from the `directories before files' problem. ---------- (205) #17 S M (mynxcat) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (23:02). 3 lines. That noise is copyrighted. You can't go using it like that! I asked for that noise ;) ---------- (205) #18 Dan Cross (cross) Mon, Aug 4, 2003 (23:34). 1 line. Bah! ---------- (205) #19 Scott Helmke (scott) Tue, Aug 5, 2003 (07:52). 2 lines. It's a "run the "backup" script, wait a bit to see if it explodes, then come back hours later" sort of job. ----------
